When you hear the words, “interior design”, what usually comes to your mind? Most of the people assume that interior decoration is the same as interior design and although there are some aspects that are present in both concepts, they are actually different.
Interior decoration is more about beautifying an existing living space, while interior designing is more of creating a new space where the designer can beautify it while construction is going on.
There is some science to interior designing and when you really boil it down to the nitty-gritty, it actually is more complicated than meets the eye.
Here are the five elements of interior design:
The space of a home or a building is one of the most important aspects of interior design. That is because it would be the canvas to which the designer will make certain changes to make everything so much beautiful.
Space can be divided into two: Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional. The former includes only the space’s width and length while the latter covers the height, as well as the width and the length.
In addition, a positive space is something that is filled with furniture and other things and a negative space is one that is devoid of anything.
There are three lines that interior designers must concern themselves with. One is the horizontal line which will add structure to anything that is used in the space and the vertical line will be used as a means to express emotion.
The dynamic line or the angular line is used to add drama and all of these different lines are used harmoniously to create beautiful spaces.
Consider the form as an outline of Three-dimensional space. A form can be created by fusing two or more different shapes and can be further accentuated with the use of patterns, colors, and textures.
Two main types of form in interior design is the Geometric or man-made form and the Natural or Organic form. They can be categorized as either open (one where a person can see the inside of the object) and closed (one where a person cannot see what is inside of a form).
There are three major types of artificial lighting and that is the mood lighting, accent lighting, and task lighting.
Task lighting includes light sources like bed lamps and all have a defined purpose.
Accent lighting is only used to highlight art pieces and décor. Mood lighting just sets the tone of an area.
Colors are also very important in interior design because it helps add life to everything that is placed inside a particular space.
That being said, there are two main categories of colors and they are the Primary and the Secondary. However, some interior designers may also look into its subcategories which include complementary, tertiary, monochromatic, and analogous colors.
